Linux

Hello, my name is not important and I am a penguin lover.

For almost two years now I’m a more or less active part of the Ubuntu community and I can honestly say: “I don’t miss Windows a bit!”. Maybe gaming could need some tweaks but that’s not the Linux guys’ fault but because of the ignorance and reluctance of the game developers. Everything else works just fine after you’ve learned how things work in a free world.

After installing a fresh Ubuntu I would recommend installing at least some of the following things:

  • ScummVM (if you don’t know what adventure games are you won’t need this)
  • Thunar (a file manager, I only need it for the bulk renamer)
  • Geany (brilliant small and fast text/code editor)
  • Tomboy Notes
  • Deluge BitTorrent Client
  • Miro (Media aggregator)
  • GFTP client (an FTP client, duh)
  • Comix (comic book/picture archive viewer)
  • Etherape (Protocol Network traffic)
  • Wireshark (analyze wireless networks)
  • Blender (3D design application)
  • nmap (Port scanning)
  • subversion (necessary for up-to-date code sources)
  • git (see subversion)
  • VLC Media player (because sometimes you just need something that works)
  • Zattoo player (stream TV over the internet)
  • Avidemux+ (Simple Video editor)
  • Audacity (Sound Editor)
  • WINE (Windows Compatibility Layer)
  • Unison (Synch tool)
  • Thunderbird (Email client that is way better than Evolution if you don’t need the calendar)

These are not in any particular order of importance just how they popped into my head.
